SHAMANIC HEALING: A TRAUMA-INFORMED APPROACH TO DEEP HEALING

Shamanic healing can be understood as a trauma-informed, integrative approach that works across the emotional, physiological, and experiential layers of the body.

While traditionally described in spiritual terms, many of these practices closely align with modern therapeutic models such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic therapies, and nervous system regulation frameworks.

Offered as mobile sessions across Southwest Florida—including North Port, Port Charlotte, Venice, Wellen Park, and Punta Gorda—this work supports healing in an environment where the nervous system can feel safe enough to reorganize.

WHAT IS SHAMANIC HEALING?

From a trauma-informed perspective, shamanic healing works with how experiences are stored in both the body and the psyche.

Unresolved or overwhelming experiences can lead to:

  • Nervous system dysregulation (chronic fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown states)

  • Fragmentation of internal experience (parts of the self becoming isolated or suppressed)

  • Persistent emotional and physiological stress patterns

  • Disconnection from bodily awareness and internal signals

Shamanic practices engage these patterns through a combination of somatic awareness, symbolic processing, and relational repair within the self.

Rather than focusing only on symptom reduction, this approach supports integration—helping different aspects of the system come back into communication and coherence.

THE CONNECTION TO INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) describes the mind as an ecosystem of “parts,” each with specific roles—often protective in nature.

These may include:

  • Protective parts that manage or control behavior to avoid discomfort

  • Reactive parts that hold emotional pain or overwhelm

  • A core Self that is capable of regulation, clarity, and connection

Shamanic healing has long worked with this same internal multiplicity, though expressed through different language.

Practices such as:

  • Soul retrieval can be understood as reconnecting with dissociated or disconnected aspects of the self

  • Shadow work aligns with bringing awareness to unconscious or avoided material

  • Energetic clearing parallels the release of maladaptive or outdated patterns

Both frameworks recognize that healing is not about eliminating parts, but about increasing internal communication, safety, and integration.

HOW THIS APPROACH SUPPORTS TRAUMA RESOLUTION

Trauma is not only what happens—it is how the nervous system organizes in response to what happens.

When the system does not have the capacity to fully process an experience, elements of that experience can remain unresolved in both the body and the psyche.

This work supports trauma resolution by:

  • Increasing nervous system regulation and capacity

  • Allowing incomplete stress responses to gently resolve

  • Supporting reconnection with dissociated or avoided aspects of self

  • Reducing chronic physiological and emotional reactivity

  • Restoring a sense of internal safety and coherence

The process is paced and responsive to the individual, avoiding overwhelm while supporting meaningful change.

WHO THIS WORK IS FOR

This approach may be supportive if you are:

  • Experiencing chronic stress or nervous system dysregulation

  • Feeling disconnected from your body, emotions, or sense of self

  • Noticing recurring patterns that feel difficult to shift cognitively

  • Moving through significant life transitions or identity changes

  • Seeking a deeper, body-based approach to emotional healing

It is particularly relevant for individuals who feel that traditional talk-based approaches have not fully addressed the underlying patterns.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A SESSION

Sessions are individualized and guided by both somatic awareness and your nervous system’s capacity.

A session may include:

  • Tracking physical sensations and internal responses

  • Gentle myofascial techniques to reduce holding patterns

  • Guided exploration of internal “parts” or emotional patterns

  • Support for nervous system regulation and stabilization

  • Integration of emotional and physiological responses as they arise

The focus is not on reliving or forcing release, but on creating enough safety for the system to process and reorganize at its own pace.
